KOHIMARAMA, New Zealand - Auckland City FC head coach Albert Riera dedicated today's Gridlock Derby victory to the memory of the late Keryn Jordan who passed away ten years ago this week.
The Navy Blues and the Lilywhites fought out a close Northern League title race during the winter but since the change of season the Madills Farm outfit has struggled to replicate the form that saw them also go the entire regional phase undefeated.
Goals for Regont Murati and Angus Kilkolly sent City into a 2-0 lead before Luis Toomey chimed in with a very good late consolation goal for the home side late on.
City lead the chase for the finals with a 100 percent winning record which also means they have gone an impressive 27 games unbeaten in the league since last year's 2-0 defeat to Auckland United at Keith Hay Park in September last year.
"This victory goes to Keryn Jordan and his family, I am sure Keryn is watching us somehow and everyone who has been part of this club, especially someone like him, make the history of this club what it is.
"We're all very proud to wear this shirt and this club and this is what we have to do - keep winning, with a winning mentality and remain humble and today was wone of those days where we see it come together with this win," Riera said.
Keryn Jordan played 80 games for Auckland City FC between 2005-06 and 2009-10, scoring 61 goals as the club won three NZFC titles, its first two OFC Champions League titles and its debut appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan 2006.
Jordan was also part of the side that finished fifth at the FIFA Club World Cup in UAE three years later after wins over Al-Ahli (2-0) and TP Mazembe (3-2).
A South African international, Jordan played professional football for Pretoria City, Manning Rangers, Moroka Swallows and Waitakere United.
Jordan also won the Chatham Cup with Central United FC in 2007.
