Ford Futsal SuperLeague 2022 postponed due to Covid-19

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - New Zealand Football, supported by our federations and following feedback from players, has today made the difficult decision to postpone the upcoming men’s and women’s Ford Futsal SuperLeague due to start later this month.

Due to the developing Omicron outbreak and the risks associated with travel and self-isolations requirements, the decision has been taken to postpone the event until later in the year when it is hopefully a safer environment for participants.

Whilst this decision will be disappointing for many players, coaches, fans, and referees across the country, New Zealand Football remains optimistic that the men’s and women’s Ford Futsal SuperLeague can take place in 2022.

Daniel Farrow, General Manager, Football at New Zealand Football, was disappointed the competitions would not be able to take place when planned but saw it as the safest decision for the game:

“What is so great about the Ford Futsal SuperLeague competitions is players from across the country coming together to play the game they love.

“Unfortunately, the risk associated with having hundreds of players travel to one location, many of which will have had to fly there, could potentially cause real challenges. Even managed in bubbles of 100 people, there is still a risk that if a player is identified as a close contact they could potentially have to isolate away from home. In this situation player welfare has to take priority.

“We know this is disappointing for the futsal community but we are optimistic we will be able to rearrange for later in the year. We will also look to increase support for the futsal competitions our federations deliver that can operate without the same travel risks.”
