AUCKLAND, NZ - Eastern Suburbs and Auckland City FC played out a tense, Gridlock Derby at Madills Farm, a match shaped by defensive discipline, long stretches without rhythm, and two goalkeepers in commanding form.

City began brightly, looking sharp in transition and dangerous on the break. The best chance of the first half fell to Angus Kilkolly, who forced a crucial save from Suburbs goalkeeper Jack de Groot after excellent work from Ryan De Vries and a driven cross from Michal Doudera. Suburbs, well‑organised and compact, absorbed pressure and gradually found their rhythm as the half wore on.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half again belonged to City, but Suburbs responded strongly in the latter stages. Nathan Garrow produced the standout save of the match, superbly keeping out a fierce effort from Joby Reid to preserve the clean sheet.

Head Coach Rudy Mozr described the contest as “a real arm‑wrestle” between two of the league’s strongest sides. “There weren’t many chances,” he said. “Both defences were strong. A draw is probably a fair result — but for me, it’s disappointing. It feels like we lost two points.”
The result leaves Eastern Suburbs sitting second after Round 12, with City just one point behind in third.

City now face a demanding 48‑hour turnaround before Monday’s Chatham Cup trip to Hamilton to meet Claudelands Rovers. “It’s crazy sometimes — in 48 hours we’re playing a cup game,” Mozr added. “But the boys will get ready, and we’ll do our best to perform at our best possible level.”
The U23s fell to a 2–0 defeat in their clash at Madills Farm. After an open and entertaining but scoreless first half, the home side struck twice after the break. The opener came from a free kick, before a late through ball produced Suburbs’ second in the final minutes.

Football is at the heart of our club — but what we’re building in Mt Roskill goes far beyond the game.
Every day, thousands of young people walk onto fields that flood, close, or simply can’t keep up with demand. They deserve a place that’s safe. A place that’s modern. A place that’s theirs.
The Roskill Schools Turf Project will deliver a year‑round, all‑weather facility with floodlights, modern changing rooms, safe access, and space for sport, learning and connection to grow.
Auckland City FC is backing this because we’ve seen what happens when kids are given a chance. Confidence grows. Friendships form. Futures open.
Your donation can help bring this project to life. A place where the next generation can play, connect and thrive — today and for years to come.
