AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC would like to extend its heartfelt thanks and congratulations to head coach Paul Posa, who has stepped down from his role following the Navy Blues’ dramatic victory in the 2025 New Zealand National League Grand Final against Wellington Olympic.
15 December 2025

The triumph capped off a gruelling yet historic season for the club, both domestically and internationally, and provided a fitting finale for Posa’s tenure. Under his leadership, Auckland City FC secured two major trophies: defending their Oceania crown in the Solomon Islands and clinching the National League title.
Posa also guided the Navy Blues onto the global stage at the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, where the amateur side faced European giants Bayern Munich and SL Benfica, as well as South American powerhouse Boca Juniors.

In one of the club’s most memorable moments, Auckland City FC held Boca Juniors to a historic 1–1 draw, ultimately finishing 27th overall, a remarkable achievement given the professional calibre of their opponents. Posa also led the team in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup qualifier against African champions Pyramids FC in Egypt, further cementing his reputation as a coach who consistently pushed boundaries.

A Legacy of Success
This was Posa’s second spell in charge of Auckland City FC, having previously managed the team from December 2008 to June 2010. During that first tenure, he delivered the club’s best-ever FIFA Club World Cup performance at the time, finishing fifth in the 2009–10 edition after victories over Al Ahli (2–0) and TP Mazembe (3–2). He also secured both the OFC Champions League and National League titles in his debut season, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in the club’s history.
Across both eras, Posa’s leadership has been defined by resilience, tactical acumen, and an unwavering belief in his players.

Final Words From the Coach
Following the Grand Final win, Posa reflected on the dramatic contest and the season as a whole:
“It was a classic. Two teams that refused to lose. In the 94th minute they scored, and we did the same to them in the 31st minute of extra time. Just heart and guts and character carried the day again. I can’t speak any more highly of those boys, they’re just incredible boys who refuse to lose.”
On the season’s challenges and triumphs, he added:
“Two trophies. Too much really, for just amateur players, over 50 games, many at high intensity overseas. Towards the end we had injuries and mental tiredness, but the spirit of this team always found a way. Credit to the club, credit to the boys, credit to the spirit within this team.”

And on stepping down:
“It was a privilege to be given the opportunity and I really thank the club and the players so much. It’s been a roller coaster, but at the end of the day the team comes first. The guys really deserve this. Great character and great boys.”
Words from Club Chairman Ivan Vuksich
“The club wishes to place on record its gratitude to Paul Posa during an historical season for the club. Paul did a great job guiding the club to successful defences of two major titles and our FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup campaigns. We wish him the best as he takes time to rest and recuperate ahead of 2026.”

Looking Ahead
Paul Posa’s departure closes a remarkable chapter in Auckland City FC’s story. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the club, inspiring players and supporters alike.
The Navy Blues will announce their new head coach in the coming days. From everyone at Auckland City FC: Thank you, Paul. We wish you all the very best for the future.
