AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Dylan Connolly's journey in football began at the tender age of four or five in Ireland. Born and raised in a football-loving family, his passion for the sport was nurtured from a young age.
"I have a huge footballing family," Connolly shared, "We support Shamrock Rovers in Ireland and Manchester United in England. Football has always been a big part of my life."
After playing for a few clubs in Ireland, Connolly made the significant decision to move to New Zealand last year. His initial stint with Birkenhead United was an opportunity to adapt to a new footballing environment, and it turned out to be a rewarding experience.
"Since coming to New Zealand, it's just been Birkenhead and then here," he said, reflecting on his journey so far. "It's been a good journey."
Connolly's life revolves around football, not just as a player but also as a coach and physiotherapist. His diverse roles within the sport speak to his deep-rooted love for the game and his commitment to contributing to its growth.
”I'm a football coach and a physio as well," he explained. "I work with a lot of athletes in sports, and I just enjoy watching football and stuff as well. So yeah, life kind of revolves around football in terms of work and playing, which is a good thing."
Joining Auckland City FC is a milestone in Connolly's career, and he is excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. "It's a massive thing, a huge opportunity," Connolly said enthusiastically.
"When they asked me to come on board, it was an easy yes. When you move to New Zealand, you hear all about the club and how big it is and all the things they've achieved. It's just a massive opportunity for me, and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Auckland City FC has a packed schedule this year, with the OFC Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon. Connolly is eager to contribute to the team's success in these prestigious tournaments.
"Yeah, it's a bit crazy," he admitted. "The schedule for this year is massive, with the OFC next month and then the Club World Cup later in the year. It's a huge year for the club, and I'm excited to be a part of it. Hopefully, I can contribute to the squad, and everyone has a good year."
