AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC spirited pursuit of top spot in the Northern League continues when the Navy Blues host Manurewa AFC at the Croatian Cultural Society on Wednesday night.

Birkenhead United lead the way with a 4 point buffer over Albert Riera's City but victory in tomorrow night's catch-up will cut that to just a single point with both teams having played 13 games each.

Manurewa AFC's season has been patchy with coach Ronil Lal's side without a league win since their 2-1 victory over Hamilton Wanderers on 4 May although they have performed better in the Chatham Cup with a notable 2-1 win over Auckland United in Round 3 and a 3-0 away win at Waiheke United prior to that in the same competition.

Rewa also have a mouthwatering Cup tie looming when they take on Onehunga-Mangere United at Memorial Park in Round 4 on Saturday.

The South Aucklanders also have four teams breathing down their neck in the relegation fight - East Coast Bays and West Coast Ranger are within 2 points of Lal's side with one more game played, so anything gained in Te Atatu will be viewed as a welcome bonus.

City will be without Liam Gillion who has joined former Navy Blues skipper and All Whites midfielder Cam Howieson at A-League side Auckland FC, while new signings Marco Lorenz and Jerson Lagos are stood down while their transfers are concluded.

Founded in 1959 Manurewa AFC competed in the New Zealand National Soccer League from 1979 to 1992, finishing as champions in 1983.

Based in the heart of South Auckland, Manurewa AFC returned to the top level of New Zealand club football in 2023 by qualifying for the National League Championship after finishing 4th in the Northern League.

Last year has capped a remarkable rise for the club which only won promotion to the Northern League at the end of the 2022 season.

Currently in 8th position on the competition ladder and 14 points outside of a spot in the top-four Manurewa will need a strong finish to the season to have any hopes of repeating last year’s success.

The match kicks off at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3 July 2024.
