City advance to Round 3 of the Chatham Cup

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC have recorded a comfortable 5-0 win over Metro FC the claim their spot in the third round of the 2024 Chatham Cup on Saturday afternoon at Kiwitea Street.

Ryan De Vries marked his 200th game for the club with a stylish strike, captain Cam Howieson scored a brace and Gerard Garriga headed home from close range before Angus Kilkolly sealed the win with a fantastic volley.

The Navy Blues have controlled proceedings from the outset against the Neil Sykes - coached side and took a deserved early lead with Howieson converting from the penalty spot following a foul on Stipe Ukich inside the box.

Garriga doubled the home side’s advantage by heading home in front of goal from a Ukich cross.

Albert Riera’s men returned from the half-time break determined to drive home their advantage and De Vries did just that with a cool finish to mark his 200th game for the club in style.

Young keeper Joe Wallis made a good save to repel a rare Metro attempt on goal at the other end before Howieson grabbed his second and City’s fourth with lovely strike from the edge of the box.

Kilkolly, who came off the bench, capped the 5-0 win with a superb volley in the final minute of regulation time.

Auckland City will next now turn their attention to the Northern League and Auckland United as the two sides set to meet in Round 12 of the competition on Saturday June 8 at Kiwitea Street.
