Football is full of larger than life characters and there were none bigger in the Auckland Football Federation than Mount Albert-Ponsonby's Brian "Stan" Stanyer.

The legend of Mount Albert-Ponsonby AFC, passed away on Wednesday 13 October, aged 61, to the shock and dismay of everyone in our football community and it is fitting that Auckland City FC reaches out to Stan's family and club.

Navy Blues club chairman Ivan Vuksich said Stanyer was a colourful and energetic figure.

"You don't stay with one club the length of time Brian did without loving what you do or the people you do it for.

"Brian set a high standard for that unconditional love and care for Mount Albert-Ponsonby AFC and taught us all something about those qualities.

"Its our pleasure to host the Mount Albert-Ponsonby AFC club and members of Brian's family at our home match today as we present them with the Brian Stanyer Memorial Trophy.

"Central United and Mount Albert-Ponsonby will contest this trophy each year not only to bring ourselves tighter together as a football community but to remember a man who helped build it.

"Its also important to acknowledge the role played by Auckland Football Federation who acted quickly to ensure everyone was informed quickly and with due sensitivity and respect," he said.

Stanyer commanded a strong presence in the colours of the club he fell in love with as a first team player in 1977.

He later held coaching and management roles for the club’s senior teams with the Anderson Park outfit.

Stanyer had an extensive record of volunteering to coach and manage club teams which later led to executive roles.

Since joining the Mount Albert Ponsonby he held every executive committee position and was crucial to the its administration and financial well-being.

Among the many accolades bestowed upon the man affectionately known as “Stan” include an Auckland Football Federation Long Service Medal in 2013.

Stanyer displayed strong leadership within the club and maintained some 35 years of consistent service.

He was widely acknowledged as the first volunteer to organize and carry out any work needed around the club.

Brian's children Dave, Lizzie, Kelsey and Ryan will be Auckland City FC's guests of honour.
