AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC today confirmed that José Figueira will finish up as head coach at the conclusion of his contract this year.

Club chairperson Ivan Vuksich said:

"The past two years have been difficult for everyone concerned due to Covid-19 and we believe the club's coaching framework needs to undergo change to reflect that.

"The effects of the pandemic on our club means our operational and technical set-up must adapt quickly and be leaner to meet the challenges ahead.

"Our aim is to streamline the current set-up with aspects of the head coach role taken up by other members of the club's technical team in future.

"I want to thank José for all his hard work and wish him all the best for his future endeavours," Vuksich said.

Figueira joined the club in 2019 and led the club to two ISPS Handa Premiership league titles, a Northern League title and two NZF Charity Cup victories during his tenure.

Auckland City FC were twice nominated for participation at the FIFA Club World Cup during Figueira's tenure.

Figueira said:

"Holding the position as head coach of Auckland City FC for the past three seasons has been a privilege. I want to thank the club, supporters, staff and players whom have all worked tirelessly to deliver success amid the profound challenges of a global pandemic and competition restructures.

"Getting to work with a team of this quality and calibre has further impassioned and extended me as a coach and I look forward to the next opportunity on my football journey."
