AUCKLAND, NZ - Auckland City FC’s preparations are well underway as the club enters a defining 2026 season, one that brings the challenge of defending both the Dettol National League title and the OFC Men’s Champions League crown.
3 March 2026
With new head coach Rudy Mozr now in place, the Navy Blues are building towards another campaign of high standards, high expectations, and high ambition.
A New Era Begins Under Rudy Mozr
Mozr returns to New Zealand after two years in Europe completing his UEFA Pro Licence, an achievement he describes as “something I always dreamed of and had as a main goal.” The opportunity to join Auckland City FC, he says, required no hesitation.
“When the opportunity came to come back to New Zealand and to Auckland City, it was an easy decision to make.”

The Czech-born coach, who previously worked at Onehunga Sports, Bucklands Beach, Manukau United and Bay Olympic, brings a blend of international education and deep familiarity with the New Zealand game. His early impressions of the club have matched the expectations he formed years ago watching the Navy Blues from the stands.
“The style of play and the identity of the club was just different to others… even after one week you can see the boys can play.”
Domestic Focus: Final National League Before Restructure

The 2026 Dettol National League marks the final season before the competition transitions to a new national format in 2027. Auckland City enter as reigning champions after their dramatic 7–6 penalty shootout victory over Wellington Olympic in the 2025 final.
The Dettol Northern League begins 21 March, featuring promoted sides Manukau United and Melville United, alongside 2025 champions Western Springs.
A blockbuster opening weekend

One of the most eye‑catching fixtures across the entire country arrives immediately, Western Springs vs Auckland City FC, the Northern League champions against the National League champions.
It’s a perfect early test for the Navy Blues and a fixture that will draw national attention as both sides look to set the tone for the season.
The Northern League is only the first step. The top performers will qualify for the Dettol National League Championship, where Auckland City FC will aim to return and defend the title they won in dramatic fashion last year.

Mozr is clear that expectations at Kiwitea Street remain unchanged.
“The targets can’t change at this club… our target is to dominate in these competitions.”
He also emphasises the responsibility that comes with wearing the shirt.
“It’s not easy to come to Auckland City. You cannot have a bad day here because you are under the radar.”

Continental Ambition: OFC Champions League Draw Sets the Stage

The draw for the 2026 OFC Men’s Champions League places Auckland City FC in a competitive Group A, alongside:
The Navy Blues will face familiar foes, including a rematch of the 2022 OFC final against AS Venus. The tournament will be held in Fiji from 9–22 August, with matches in Lautoka and Ba.
Mozr acknowledges both the pressure and the privilege of leading Oceania’s most successful club.
“If you step into a club like Auckland City, the expectations are high, the pressure is higher, but that’s what you do football for.”

Philosophy, Identity, and the ACFC Way
Mozr’s coaching philosophy aligns closely with the club’s long-standing identity.
“I like my team to play with the ball… I want people coming to watch Auckland City not just because there is a game, but because it’s an exciting game.”
He sees his role not as reinventing the club, but as safeguarding its standards.
“My job is not to take credit for what has been done, but to protect it and keep the standards high.”
He also highlights the importance of the wider ACFC community — volunteers, youth coaches, staff, and supporters.
“There are so many people behind the scenes who make unbelievable work… Auckland City is a club with a culture and an idea, and that’s very important to me.”

Looking Ahead
With a refreshed coaching staff, a motivated squad, and two major titles to defend, Mozr is embracing the challenge ahead.
“I’m confident we’ve built an overall strong team and we’ll be successful.”
The Navy Blues now turn their attention to a long season stretching across domestic and continental fronts, a season that could further cement Auckland City FC’s legacy at home and across Oceania.
