AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC face their most crucial challenge yet when they travel to Seddon Fields on Saturday night to take on Northern League leaders Western Springs in a high-stakes showdown that could shape the course of their season.
25 July 2025
After returning from the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the Navy Blues have endured a frustrating run, back-to-back losses, that have left them seventh in the league table with 25 points from 15 matches. Their opponents, Western Springs, have surged to the top, boasting 35 points from 16 games and looking every bit the Northern league title favourites.
With ten points separating the sides and the race for National League qualification tightening, Auckland City FC defender Michael den Heijer didn’t sugarcoat the pressure they’re under:
“Nobody’s happy with the league position currently… there’s a bit of pressure at the moment and I think that’s when this club and these players know when to step up.”
Saturday’s encounter marks the 11th meeting between the two clubs. Auckland City hold the historical edge with six wins, but Western Springs have the upper hand recently, winning three, including the last two, and earning one draw. The last time they met, a Benjamin Wallace header sealed a 1–0 win for Western Springs at Kiwitea Street.
Despite the setbacks, Den Heijer insists the squad is mentally locked in:
“It starts from training… doing the basics right. We’re extremely motivated to put things right.”
Western Springs will be a formidable force on home turf, but Auckland City are no strangers to tough assignments, and no strangers to rising when it matters. A win would reignite their campaign, restore confidence, and throw them right back into the race.
