Mozr: 'No Easy Games in National League'

AUCKLAND, NZ- Auckland City FC's National League title defence finally gets underway this Sunday with a trip to Madills Farm to face Eastern Suburbs AFC, and head coach Rudy Mozr is expecting nothing less than a stern examination.

The Navy Blues were forced to watch on during the opening weekend after receiving a first-round bye, extending the gap since their last competitive fixture following a demanding Northern League and OFC Champions League campaign.

While the extra week has allowed players carrying minor knocks to recover, Mozr admits the timing was far from ideal.

“It’s never the right moment to have a bye,” he said.

“On the other hand, we could have rested some of the boys who had some niggles after the Northern League and the Champions League.”

After months of preparation and a successful domestic campaign, Auckland City now turn their focus towards retaining the National League crown. Awaiting them is an Eastern Suburbs side still searching for their first win of the campaign and eager to make a statement on home soil.

Mozr expects exactly that response.

“I think they would be pretty disappointed not to get a win in their first round, so I’m sure there will be even more buzzing for the home game against us.”

The challenge facing Auckland City is clear.

Recent meetings between the two sides have been fiercely contested affairs, with goals proving difficult to come by. In their last two encounters, the Navy Blues failed to find the net against a side renowned for its defensive discipline and organisation.

“The previous two games, we couldn’t score against them,” Mozr said.

“Their defensive record is fantastic this year and it’s a team which is really hard to break down. We need to do our job right, and I believe we will come to the point.”

Eastern Suburbs enjoyed another strong Northern League campaign and have built a reputation as one of the competition’s most organised outfits. Their structure without the ball and ability to frustrate opponents has made them one of the toughest assignments in domestic football.

For Auckland City, Sunday represents the beginning of another title challenge, but there are no expectations of an easy start.

“It’s a tough place to go to and of course it’s a derby match as well, so it’s promising to be a difficult challenge again,” Mozr said.

“I don’t think you have easy games in the National League.”

“That’s something that is good. It brings competition to clubs and to the players. Everybody is expecting tough games, but we’re looking forward to it.”

As ever, the margin between success and failure is likely to be slim. A disciplined opponent, a hostile away environment and the intensity of a local derby combine to create exactly the sort of test expected at National League level.

Mozr would not have it any other way.

“They’re good players, a very organised team, defensively very, very well organised,” he said. “They obviously had a good Northern League campaign as well, and we’re expecting a very tough game.”

Sunday’s clash offers Auckland City the opportunity to begin their title defence with three points, but the message from their head coach is clear: nothing will come easily at Madills Farm.
