HONIARA, Solomon Islands- Auckland City FC’s seasoned left-back, Nathan Lobo, is on the cusp of a career milestone, entering his 100th appearance for the Navy Blues as he prepares to embark on his fourth OFC Champions League campaign.

The experienced defender arrived in Honiara, Solomon Islands, with anticipation running high ahead of Sunday’s Group A opener against Tahiti’s AS Pirae.
Having already secured three OFC Champions League titles, Lobo and his team aim to extend their record by clinching a 13th continental crown. Last year’s campaign culminated in a resounding 4-0 victory over AS Pirae in the finals in Tahiti, marking Auckland City’s 12th championship triumph.
Now, the Navy Blues are back to write another chapter in their storied Oceania journey.
Speaking about his arrival in Honiara, Lobo shared his thoughts on the challenging journey and the sweltering conditions. “It was a long trip, but I’m happy to be here and glad we got the first training session under our belts,” he said. “It’s hot – as you’d expect in the islands – but it’s a different kind of heat. It’s all about getting conditioned now.”
With the group stage matches set to unfold at Lawson Tama Stadium, the spiritual home of Solomon Islands football, adapting to the tropical climate becomes a crucial factor for Auckland City’s success. Despite the intense heat, Lobo remains optimistic: “Today’s session started tough, but we settled into it and finished strong.”
As the most decorated club in the competition’s history, Auckland City FC is a formidable contender but will face stiff competition in Group A, featuring Fiji’s Rewa FC, New Caledonia’s AS Tiga Sport, and Tahiti’s AS Pirae. Only the top two teams will progress to the semi-finals, with the ultimate goal of lifting the Champions League trophy.
Reflecting on his personal aspirations, Lobo admitted, “The Champions League is a prestigious tournament, and winning a fourth medal would mean the world. It’s always special representing Auckland City on the international stage.”
With several experienced players in the squad, the team’s morale is buoyant. “The mood in the camp is great,” Lobo said. “We’re all excited to get started. The first game will be crucial, and we’re eager to make a strong start.”
Lobo’s previous campaigns in Auckland, Vanuatu, and Tahiti have prepared him for the rigorus of Oceania’s premier club tournament. However, he knows the road ahead won’t be easy. “Every team here is good. Our group is strong, and so is the other group. Our focus is on getting through the group stage and taking it one game at a time.”
As the countdown to the opening match begins, Nathan Lobo and Auckland City FC are ready to embrace the challenges of the OFC Champions League 2025 and aim for yet another triumph.
