League Leaders Ready for PN Test

AUCKLAND, New Zealand— Fresh from a flawless weekend that sent them soaring to the summit of the Ford Futsal SuperLeague, Auckland City FC x NRF return to Pulman Arena on Saturday looking to tighten their grip on first place when they face Palmerston North Marist FC in Round 7.

A new landscape at the top

Six rounds in, the table has a very different complexion. Auckland City FC now lead the league with 13 points, their record of four wins, one draw and one defeat backed by a league‑best +12 goal difference and the competition’s most potent attack.

Canterbury United Dragons remain in close pursuit on 12 points, while Capital,  the early frontrunners, have slipped to third after being swept aside at Pulman last weekend.

For the first time this season, the Navy Blues aren’t chasing. They’re being chased.

Last weekend: two statements, one message

The double‑header against Capital was billed as a test of title credentials. City passed it with authority.

Saturday’s 3–1 win set the tone: disciplined, controlled, and decisive in the key moments. Sunday’s 8–3 dismantling was something else entirely, a ruthless display of tempo, pressure and finishing that left no doubt about the direction of this team.

From back to front, City dictated the rhythm, punished errors, and showed the composure of a side growing into its identity. Six points, nine goals, and a clear message to the rest of the league.

Downes: “We’re where we want to be,  now we have to stay there”

Head coach Nic Downes has been consistent all season: set the standard of who we want to be on court. But even he acknowledged the significance of last weekend’s sweep.

“We showed maturity in how we managed both games,” he said. “Capital are a good side, aggressive in defence and direct in attack. We had to adapt a bit to ride out some of their momentum, as well as deal with the injuries to Kern (Platts-Mills) and Art (Twigg), but we really showed in that second game how adaptable and clinical we can be.”

The challenge now is consistency. Being at the top means every team wants to take points off you. We have to embrace that.”

With momentum on their side and confidence flowing, City now face a different kind of test, performing as favourites.

The visitors: a dangerous underdog

Palmerston North Marist FC arrive with just three points from five matches, but their performances have been far more competitive than the table suggests. They’ve scored in every match, pushed Waikato and BoP to the wire, and possess enough attacking threat to trouble anyone on their day.

For City, this is exactly the kind of fixture that can trip up a contender if approached lightly. Downes and his staff won’t allow that.

What’s at stake

  • For Auckland City FC x NRF: a chance to strengthen their position at the top and build a buffer before the run‑in tightens.
  • For Palmerston North: an opportunity to claim a statement scalp and climb off the bottom group.

With City in full flow and Palmerston North fighting for traction, expect intensity, ambition, and plenty of goals.
