AUCKLAND, NZ — Auckland City FC rose to the occasion in thrilling fashion on Saturday night, scoring twice in stoppage time to overturn a first-half deficit and snatch a vital 2–1 win over Northern League leaders Western Springs at Seddon Fields.

In a match brimming with intensity and National League implications, goals from David Yoo and Christian Gray ensured the Navy Blues would not only revive their National League hopes, but also mark a special milestone with their 100th Northern League appearance, a century notched with drama, grit, and championship DNA.
Back-to-back defeats since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup had dropped Auckland City to seventh place, leaving little margin for error. But history has shown the defending champions respond best when cornered, and they did not disappoint.
Despite early missed chances, including Haris Zeb narrowly failing to convert after a slick buildup with Myer Bevan and Yoo, the visitors looked the more dangerous side until Western Springs hit first on the break. A slightly deflected effort from Jordan Hackett gave the hosts a 1–0 lead with their first real opportunity.
But City didn’t blink.
Just before the halftime whistle, Jerson Lagos intercepted a Springs set piece, embarked on a pulsating 70-metre dash, and teed up David Yoo for the equaliser. Yoo’s cool finish marked a turning point, not just in the match, but possibly in the season.
“We knew we had to get three points tonight,” Yoo said post-match. “After the Club World Cup, things weren’t good enough. I’m proud of the boys, this club knows how to perform under pressure.”
Both teams chased a winner after the break. Missed chances from Bevan and Angus Kilkolly, and a close header from Springs skipper Reid Drake, kept tensions high.
Then, in the dying seconds, Christian Gray emerged. As he did famously against Boca Juniors, Gray pounced on a Lagos corner, burying it to hand City all three points.
Saturday’s win lifted Auckland City to fifth, within two points of Eastern Suburbs and Auckland United, and crucially, the Navy Blues have a game in hand. It also marked the club’s 100th Northern League fixture, boasting 79 wins, 273 goals, and a history of turning pressure into triumph.
Yoo knows the task isn’t over yet. With Birkenhead looming on Wednesday:
“We’ve got six games left, we need to win them all. That’s what this club does. We perform when it matters most.”
