AUCKLAND, NZ - Auckland City returned to the winners’ circle with a 4–2 victory over Manukau United, a result that steadied their Northern League campaign after a difficult run in front of goal. It was not perfect, but it carried the sharpness and intent that had been missing in recent weeks.

Kiwitea Street paused before kick‑off for a moment of silence in memory of Nick Didovich, a figure whose warmth, generosity and unwavering support helped shape the identity of Auckland City FC. It was an emotional afternoon, and the performance that followed felt like a fitting tribute: purposeful, committed and delivered with a collective spirit that reflected the man the club was honouring.

City struck early. Kieran Richards opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes, finishing cleanly to give the Navy Blues the start they had been searching for.

But Manukau responded quickly. On 17 minutes, Jama Boss avoided the offside trap to finish from close range, levelling the match at 1–1 and briefly unsettling the rhythm City had built.
At the 25‑minute mark came one of the game’s major turning points. A brief scuffle broke out, and Manukau United were reduced to ten men when Ibrahim Nadir was shown a straight red card. With the score at 1–1, the dismissal shifted the momentum decisively in City’s favour.

Just two minutes later, Nathan Rostron restored the lead, stabbing home from close range after sustained pressure.
Moments later, Tom Golding swept in his first goal for the club, a composed finish that capped a dominant spell and gave City a 3–1 advantage at the break.

With Manukau reduced to ten men, the hosts controlled the tempo and created chances with far greater confidence than in recent outings.
The second half brought more of the same.

Substitute Nic Zambrano almost made an instant impact with a glancing header, and the pressure eventually told when Michal Doudera marked his first goal for the club with a crisp volley on 69 minutes. It was a deserved reward for City’s renewed attacking edge.

The home side had a chance to extend their lead further in the 82nd minute when Shaan Anand was fouled inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, but Roshan Kumar produced a brilliant save, diving to his right to deny captain Mario Ilich from twelve yards.
Moments later, the afternoon delivered a special moment for the club’s pathway. In the 83rd minute, U23 player Kian Shahbazpour was introduced for his first‑team debut, a proud milestone on a day already rich with emotion and significance.
Manukau pulled one back late, but the result was never in doubt. What mattered more was the response: four goals, four different scorers, and a performance that looked far more like Auckland City FC.

Captain Mario Ilich reflected on the significance of the win.
“It wasn’t pretty at times, but we created a lot of chances and scored goals. After three games without scoring, it’s a big positive. Much‑needed three points and hopefully it kick‑starts our run.”
He also emphasised the importance of shared responsibility in front of goal.

“We don’t want to rely on one person. As many people contributing as possible — that’s what we like to see. Huge team effort today.”
And on the emotional weight of the afternoon, Ilich dedicated the victory to a man who meant so much to the club. “Nick loved every single one of us, no matter the result. May he rest in peace — that one’s for him and his family.”

Earlier in the day, the U23s battled to a 1–1 draw after leading at half‑time, showing real character despite going down to ten men. Their resilience set the tone for a day where both sides honoured a club legend with performances full of heart.
