The result came as an unexpected setback for the Navy Blues, who entered the fixture buoyed by back-to-back victories over the top two teams in the Northern League and hoping to cement their place in the top three.

From the opening whistle, Fencibles played with the desperation of a team fighting for survival. Their defensive setup was disciplined and compact, absorbing Auckland City’s early possession with patience and tactical awareness.

Whether Auckland showed signs of complacency or fatigue after a demanding week, the visitors made certain they would not be rolled over. The breakthrough came shortly before halftime, when Dylan Laing-McConnell rose above a crowded box to head home from a corner in the 43rd minute a familiar sting for the Navy Blues, who have struggled defending set pieces all season.

The mood shifted dramatically in the second half. Auckland City returned to the field reinvigorated, chasing the equaliser with intensity and purpose. Their dominance in possession turned into chances, and the pressure finally paid off when Joe Lee was brought down inside the box.

Myer Bevan, calm under pressure, buried the penalty to restore parity. With momentum on their side, City pressed for a late winner, surging forward time and time again. Yet Fencibles held firm, refusing to collapse under the growing weight of the champions’ attack, and ultimately walked away with a deserved share of the points.

After the match, Gerard Garriga didn’t mince words. “I think it’s a tough, tough result for us,” he said. “We came from two important wins, back at home after a long stretch, and we didn’t show the excitement or energy in the first half. Honestly, we weren’t good enough.” Garriga expressed his disappointment not just with the result, but with the team’s mindset, especially in the opening 45 minutes. “When you put on this shirt, you need to carry high expectations. We didn’t meet them today.”

He was particularly critical of the recurring defensive frailty on set pieces—now responsible for four of the last five goals conceded. “It’s about concentration, willingness, and desire to win the ball. Right now, we’re just not good enough in those moments,” Garriga admitted. While acknowledging the demanding schedule, he was firm in his belief that Auckland City should be able to cope, referencing the team’s endurance in the OFC Champions League and Club World Cup campaigns.

With four matches remaining and the table finely poised, Garriga’s message to his players was clear: improvement is non-negotiable. “It’s in our hands,” he said. “But today leaves a sad feeling.”

The draw may not have delivered what the Navy Blues  hoped for, but it offered a reminder of just how unforgiving the Northern League can be. For Fencibles United, every point is precious.

For Auckland City, the chase continues, with sharpened focus and renewed urgency.
