It will be the third time in four seasons that the Navy Blues and Olympic have contested the title, a fixture now steeped in tradition, pride, and the weight of history.

A Rivalry Written in Finals

The ledger between these sides in grand finals is finely balanced. Auckland City edged Olympic 3-2 in 2022, before the capital club struck back with a 2-0 victory in 2023. Last year, Auckland City lifted the trophy after a tense extra-time win over Birkenhead United, but the rivalry with Olympic has remained the competition’s heartbeat.

Their most recent meeting, in October’s round-robin stage, was another nail-biter. Auckland City snatched a 1-0 win in Wellington thanks to a late strike from Angus Kilkolly, who latched onto Riley Dalziell’s cross in the 82nd minute. That result not only secured the Mediterranean Cup for the Navy Blues but also underlined the razor-thin margins that separate these two sides.

The Mediterranean Cup: More Than Silverware

The Mediterranean Cup adds a unique layer of meaning to this clash. Donated by Dennis Katsanos and his family, the trophy embodies the shared heritage of Auckland City, Central United, and Wellington Olympic, clubs founded by Croatian and Greek migrant communities whose passion for football helped shape the sport in New Zealand.

Currently held by Auckland City, the Cup was reclaimed in October’s 1-0 win over Olympic. It marked the seventh victory for the Navy Blues in this storied rivalry, which now enters its 13th chapter. For players and supporters alike, the Cup is more than a prize: it is a living connection to generations of footballing families, a reminder that this fixture is about identity as much as results.

Paths to the Final

Both sides arrive in the grand final on the back of decisive wins. Olympic overcame Miramar Rangers 2-1 at Wakefield Park despite playing two-thirds of the match with ten men after Justin Gulley’s dismissal. Auckland City, meanwhile, completed their late-season rally with a 3-0 victory over Coastal Spirit at Kiwitea Street, though they were made to wait nearly an hour before breaking the deadlock.

These results secured the top two places on the table, setting up a finale that feels almost inevitable: Auckland City versus Wellington Olympic, the clash that has defined the National League era.

Tradition Meets Tension

The roots of this rivalry stretch back to 1994, when Central United first faced Olympic in the Superclub National Round. The Mediterranean Cup, born from a spirited over-35s clash in 2013, has since become a fixture in encounters between the clubs. From rain-soaked pitches to post-match feasts, the Cup has always symbolised more than football, it is about community, culture, and continuity.

Now, with the National League title on the line, that tradition collides with the present. Auckland City seek to extend their dominance, while Olympic aim to reclaim the crown and reassert their place at the summit.
