Auckland, NZ — The stakes are high, the rivalry fierce, and the battle for Northern League supremacy, as well as qualification for the National League, is heating up.
21 August 2025
Auckland City FC faces Auckland United FC this Saturday in a match that could define the tightest title race in the competition’s storied history.
As the curtain falls on the 2025 Northern League season, and with just two rounds remaining, five teams are still in contention for the crown. Even sixth-placed East Coast Bays could crash the top-four party.
At the other end of the table, three teams are fighting for survival. It’s not just a race, it’s a war of attrition, precision, and nerve.
Auckland City FC sits fourth on the table with 36 points, level with third-placed United. Two wins could see the Navy Blues crowned champions, if Western Springs and Birkenhead United falter.
However, if the Navy Blues lose both of their remaining matches, they could drop down to sixth place and miss out on National League football.
The last time Auckland City faced United, the Navy Blues came out on top 1–0 in a fiercely contested Dominion Road derby on 24 May. The match was decided by a moment of brilliance from skipper Mario Ilich, whose thunderous strike in the 54th minute rattled the underside of the crossbar before nestling into the net.

🎙️ MYER BEVAN ON THE FINAL PUSH
Striker Myer Bevan, fresh off scoring the winner against Eastern Suburbs on Tuesday night shared his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s showdown:
“They’re a very good team, you know, they’re up the ladder with us. We’ve got two must-win games and we start on Saturday. Destiny is in our own hands, and that’s the beautiful thing about football.”
Bevan acknowledged the challenges of a disrupted season but praised the squad’s resilience:
“It’s been a difficult year—going away, coming back—but we’re digging deep. Every week I’m confident in the boys. Two more games, two must-win games, and we’re in the National League.”
Every match in the final two rounds has something riding on it, the title, top four, or survival. City must summon every ounce of grit, strategy, and belief to stay alive.
The Navy Blues have been here before. But never like this. The team is ready. The fans are ready. The moment is now.
