AUCKLAND, NZ - Auckland City's National League fate hangs in the balance following a frustrating 2-2 draw in a fiercely contested Dominion Road derby on Saturday night at Keith Hay Park.
23 August 2025
In a match that marked the Navy Blues’ 650th competitive outing since their inception in 2004, the occasion was fittingly dramatic, but ultimately frustrating.
First-Half Brilliance, Second-Half Blues
City came out firing in the first half, showcasing the kind of fluid attacking football that has defined their dominance over the years. Matt Ellis was electric down the left flank, carving open United’s defense with a dazzling run before teeing up Gerard Garriga for the opener. The Spaniard made no mistake, slotting home to give City a deserved lead.

10 minutes later, Jerson Lagos doubled the advantage with a wicked corner delivery that caught the United backline napping. At 2–0, the Navy Blues looked in cruise control, poised to take a giant step toward National League qualification.

But football, as ever, is a game of two halves.
United emerged from the break with renewed purpose. Matthew Conroy halved the deficit just ten minutes into the second period, capitalising on a lapse in City’s defensive shape. Then, in the 67th minute, Daniel Atkinson punished City again from a corner, an all-too-familiar Achilles heel for the Navy Blues this season.

Captain Mario Ilich didn’t mince words after the final whistle.
“After going two goals up in the first half, it was a pretty good performance, I thought,” he said. “To let it slip away with two set-piece goals is pretty frustrating, to be honest.”
Despite the disappointment, Ilich remained defiant and focused on the task ahead.
“It’s obviously do or die at this stage of the season… Destiny is in our hands. We’ll rest up, train hard, and go again.”
Final Round Showdown
With Birkenhead United (42 pts) and Western Springs (41 pts) already punching their tickets to the National League, the final round promises high drama. Four teams—Auckland City, Auckland United, Eastern Suburbs (all on 37 pts), and East Coast Bays (36 pts)—will battle for the remaining two spots.
And the fixtures couldn’t be more tantalising:
| Fixture | Stakes |
| Auckland City vs East Coast Bays | Must-win for both sides |
| Western Springs vs Auckland United | Title and qualification implications |
| Birkenhead United vs Eastern Suburbs | Crown decider meets qualification clash |
Milestone Moments
What’s Next?
Auckland City return home to Kiwitea Street next Saturday for a do-or-die clash against East Coast Bays. With everything on the line, National League qualification, pride, and redemption, the Navy Blues will need to summon every ounce of grit and quality to ensure their season doesn’t end prematurely.

As Ilich put it: “Make sure you get behind us… we’ve got a big game next Saturday to make the National League.”
The stage is set. The stakes are sky-high. And Auckland City’s destiny is still theirs to claim.
