With  three matches remaining for both City and the Lilywhites and just two for the rest of the competition, the race for a top-four finish and a coveted spot in the National League, has never been tighter.

The Navy Blues currently sit fifth on the ladder, three points adrift of fourth-placed Eastern Suburbs. But a win on Tuesday would see them leapfrog their rivals and also draw level on points with third-placed Auckland United, whom they face next on Saturday.

The equation is simple: win all three remaining matches, and Auckland City FC will secure their place in the National League.

🎙️Mario Ilich: “It’s crunch time. These are the games every player wants to be part of.”

Club captain Mario Ilich knows exactly what’s at stake.

“Yeah, absolutely. It’s crunch time,” Ilich said. “These are the games that every player wants to be a part of. They come down to the wire in the season. So yeah, every game is going to be like a cup final.”

The Navy Blues have been training with intensity and purpose, fully aware of the challenge posed by Eastern Suburbs,  a side that has already beaten them once this season. Back in Round 9, the Lilywhites edged Auckland City 1–0 at Madills Farm, with Alexander Irwin’s 19th-minute header proving decisive.

“They’re physically a very strong team and they have some good attacking threats,” Ilich noted. “We’re going to have to be at the top of our game. The results haven’t been going our way recently, so it’s about bouncing back and getting maximum points.”

Eastern Suburbs will be desperate to respond after their heartbreaking Chatham Cup semifinal loss to Wellington Olympic on Saturday, falling in a penalty shootout. That disappointment adds another layer of intensity to Tuesday’s clash.

For Auckland City, the pressure is immense, but it’s a familiar feeling.

“We’ve been in a lot of tricky situations before,” Ilich reflected. “It’s something we’re used to. I’ve got every faith in this group to get us out of it. It’s about taking it one game at a time and doing it together.”

With everything on the line, Auckland City FC need their supporters more than ever. Come dressed in blue and white, bring the noise, and help push the team toward a crucial victory.
