The Navy Blues were dominant from the outset, controlling possession and territory, but their inability to finish off chances kept the game tense.

Christian Gray broke the deadlock finishing from a Jerson Lagos delivery, continuing their lethal set-piece partnership.

However, Eastern Suburbs hit back through Jake Mechell, exploiting City’s season-long vulnerability on corners.

Just when the momentum threatened to shift, Myer Bevan stepped up. The striker latched onto a slick through ball and coolly slotted home what proved to be the match-winner. Speaking after the game, Bevan reflected on the moment:

“I saw the gap and just trusted my instincts,” he said. “We’ve been grinding all season, and tonight was about showing we belong in that top four. I’m proud of the boys, we stayed composed and got the job done.”

Bevan also acknowledged the pressure of the moment:

Despite late pressure from the Lilywhites, goalkeeper Gavin Garrow made a crucial save in stoppage time to preserve the lead. The final whistle brought relief and renewed belief for the defending champions, who now face Auckland United in a top-four showdown next week, with both sides level on points.

“It’s crunch time now. Every game is a final. We’ve got two more to go, and we’re ready to fight for every point.”

With momentum building and their fate in their own hands, Auckland City are peaking at just the right time. The road to the National League is narrowing, and the Navy Blues are charging through.
