The first half offered few clear chances, with the Navy Blues dominating territory but struggling to break down a disciplined Reserves block. The visitors defended deep, absorbed pressure and waited for transition moments, but City’s back line — calm, organised, and rarely stretched — handled those threats with minimal fuss.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes after the restart. A loose clearance dropped kindly for Angus Kilkolly, who needed no second invitation: one touch to set, one touch to finish, drilled low into the corner. It was the kind of striker’s moment that changes the temperature of a match, and City immediately settled into a more confident rhythm.

From there, the Navy Blues controlled the tempo. Passes stuck, combinations sharpened, and the Reserves were forced deeper and deeper as City’s midfield dictated the flow. The visitors’ final chance came in stoppage time — a late free kick floated hopefully into the box — but the delivery drifted harmlessly over everyone and out for a goal kick.

City sealed the result in the 86th minute. Ryan De Vries, ever the poacher, arrived at the perfect moment to guide home the second and remove any lingering doubt. Professional, measured, and deserved — exactly the type of performance required in the late-season grind.

The win keeps Auckland City FC firmly in the hunt, with another clean sheet and another reminder of their ability to manage games with maturity.
