AUCKLAND, NZ - Auckland City FC began the defence of their National League crown with a pulsating 4-2 victory over Eastern Suburbs in a six-goal Gridlock Derby thriller at Madills Farm on Sunday.

In a match full of quality, momentum swings and attacking football, the Navy Blues always seemed to have an answer whenever the hosts threatened a comeback. Four different goalscorers found the net as City secured three valuable points from one of the toughest away trips on the domestic calendar.

“We knew it was always going to be tough out here at Madills,” captain Mario Ilich said afterwards.
“We haven’t had a great track record here in the last couple of years, so to kick off the National League with three points in that way is a huge start.”
A tight and fiercely contested first half was settled by a moment of quality from Auckland City’s Czech duo.
Michal Doudera threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the Eastern Suburbs defence and fellow countryman Pavel Osmančík raced onto it before producing a sharp finish to hand the visitors a deserved lead in the 26th minute.

City looked composed and in control for much of the opening spell, limiting Eastern Suburbs opportunities while creating the better chances.
“I think first half we really controlled the game and limited their chances,” said Ilich.
The visitors took that advantage into the interval and looked well positioned to push on after the break
The derby erupted into life in the second half.
Just eight minutes after the restart, Ryan Watson doubled City’s advantage, powering home a header from a pinpoint Dylan Manickum delivery to put the Navy Blues firmly in command.

But Eastern Suburbs responded with a goal of real quality. Héctor Eduardo Echagüe produced an excellent finish to halve the deficit and ignite hopes of a comeback.
Any momentum generated by the hosts was short-lived.
Doudera, already influential as a creator, stepped up to restore City’s two-goal cushion with a superb free-kick that left the goalkeeper with little chance.

For head coach Rudy Mozr, the attacking output underlined the quality available throughout the squad.
“We spoke about how good Eastern Suburbs are defensively, but we scored four goals,” he said.
“If you score four goals, you can’t really be disappointed with your action going forward.”
The Lilywhites refused to surrender.
When Agustín Contratti headed home to make it 3-2 with seven minutes remaining, the contest was suddenly back in the balance and a tense finish loomed.
Yet once again Auckland City responded.
Deep into stoppage time, Mike Den Heijer showed composure inside the area to pick out Fergus Gillion, who finished clinically to put the result beyond doubt and complete an entertaining afternoon’s work.

“They threw everything at us, which was expected,” Ilich reflected.
“Fair play to them, they got back into the game. But we were so resilient and I thought we took our chances really well in the second half.”
Mozr was equally pleased with how his side handled the challenge.
“To come here is probably one of the hardest games in the league,” he said.
“It’s a very hard team to break down. It took time, but the boys did a fantastic job today. I’m very pleased.”
The afternoon also carried significance beyond the result.
Goalkeeper Louie Caunter marked a memorable return in Navy Blue, rolling back the years to appear for Auckland City more than a decade after his previous senior outing for the club.
Supporters also received their first glimpse of new signing Bilal Habib. The Somali international entered during the second half and immediately showed flashes of his potential, producing several intelligent touches and moments of quality in possession that hinted at exciting things to come.

Mozr believes the strength in depth throughout the squad will play a key role in the months ahead.
“We’ve got players pushing all the time and that’s something extremely good about this team,” he said.
The Navy Blues now turn their attention to another major early-season test.
Next Saturday, Auckland City welcome Wellington Olympic to Kiwitea Street in a replay of last season’s National League Grand Final, with the Mediterranean Cup also on the line.
While pleased with the opening-day victory, Ilich was quick to stress that the challenge only becomes tougher from here.
“Everyone’s trying to beat us,” he said.
“We want to defend our title and make it three years in a row. It’s a great start today, but we’ve got to back it up next weekend. We’ll enjoy this win, get back to training and get ready for another battle.”
