City Sign Off in Style

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - There are few more fitting farewells than a dominant Cup display, and Auckland City ensured they left Kiwitea Street with heads held high, sweeping aside Onehunga Mangere United 4-0 in the Chatham Cup before turning their focus to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

It was a swift start from the Navy Blues, with Jerson Lagos setting the tone early, converting just three minutes in after some neat work from Regont Murati.A hectic schedule saw the reigning champions backing up less than 24 hours after their 5-2 Northern League win over West Coast Rangers, but despite weary legs, they remained in control.

Onehunga Mangere United goalkeeper Tane Francis put up stubborn resistance, denying Lagos and Dylan Manickum to keep the visitors in contention at halftime. But after the break, Lagos struck again, this time slotting home from Jordan Vale’s byline cut-back.

With the contest effectively settled, Auckland City continued to flex their attacking muscle. Matt Ellis lashed home from outside the box before Ryan De Vries capped off the rout, finishing off a brilliant run and pinpoint pass from Angus Kilkolly.

For Lagos, it was a satisfying brace and a fitting conclusion to his domestic duties before embarking on a far greater challenge. “It was really good, good to get two goals in the bag, good to end the way here in New Zealand,” the forward said post-match. “Now we’re heading to America, and from here, it’s not gonna get any easier.”

City now turn their attention to the Club World Cup, departing Monday to take on the world’s best. “It’s exciting, there’s a lot of emotions going on,” Lagos admitted. And as the Navy Blues step onto the global stage, they’ll be hoping to channel that emotion into one more memorable chapter.
