This season will be the final year under the current format, with major structural changes arriving in 2027 — a full winter national league, both competitions becoming fully club‑based for the first time, and the introduction of promotion and relegation.

2027 format changes

The 2026 men’s competition features 11 teams: Auckland City, Auckland FC Reserves, Auckland United, Birkenhead United, Cashmere Technical, Eastern Suburbs, Ferrymead Bays, Miramar Rangers, Napier City Rovers, Wellington Olympic and Wellington Phoenix Reserves.

City Begin Their Title Defence

The Navy Blues enter the competition as defending champions, having lifted the 2025 title in dramatic fashion — a 1–1 draw in normal time, 2–2 after extra time, and a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Wellington Olympic at Newtown Park.

That storyline returns immediately: ACFC’s first home match of the new campaign is a grand final rematch against Olympic.

Head Coach Rudy Mozr — On the Road Ahead

The Navy Blues’ coach says the group is ready for the challenge and hungry to push further:

“We are all really excited to get the National League underway. At Auckland City, we know the standards and expectations that come with representing this club, and I feel we’ve grown and improved a lot as a team throughout the season.”

“The challenge now is to keep pushing forward and continue building on that progress. We have a hungry and ambitious group that wants to compete and win every time we step onto the pitch. We have huge respect for the quality of the National League, but our ambition is clear: we want to compete at the very top and give ourselves the opportunity to finish the season with another trophy”.
