AUCKLAND, NZ - Auckland City fell to a 3–2 defeat at Shepherds Park after a wild opening spell and a late surge that ultimately wasn’t enough to deny league‑leading Birkenhead United a deserved victory.

The first half exploded into life with three goals inside seven minutes. Birkenhead struck twice in quick succession through Monty Patterson and a second goal straight from the restart, punishing early City errors.
Garriga responded instantly for the Navy Blues, but Josh Redfearn restored the hosts’ two‑goal cushion before the break.
The second half brought fewer goals but no shortage of tension. Birkenhead almost extended their lead when Patterson struck the post, inches away from putting the game out of reach. At the other end, Auckland City nearly benefitted from a defensive mix‑up, with a sliced clearance threatening to creep in before Oliver Pocock scrambled it clear.
City pushed hard in the final stages. Manickum had the ball in the net, but the assistant’s flag ruled it out for offside. Deep into stoppage time, the pressure finally told as Garriga grabbed his second from a late corner.
But Birkenhead — physical, disciplined, and clinical when it mattered — held on to secure all three points and underline their status at the top of the table.
Post‑match reaction
Defender Christian Gray, making his return to the Navy Blues, said he was pleased to be back on the pitch but disappointed with the outcome.
“It’s definitely good to be back after some time away. But obviously the result is disappointing. It’s always hard to come back after going down 2–0 so early, and unfortunately today we just couldn’t pull it back.”
Head coach Rudy Mozr echoed the frustration, pointing to the early goals as a decisive factor.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game. When you’re two goals down inside five minutes, it becomes very difficult. There were moments when we were good, and we were unlucky with the offside goal that could have put us back in it, but that’s football. If you concede three goals in games like this, you can’t expect to be successful. There’s a lot we need to fix.”
Auckland City now turn their attention to a midweek clash with East Coast Bays as they look to respond.
