With less than a month until kick-off, the path toward defending the national title is now clear, and the final season under the current league structure gives Auckland City FC one more chance to dominate the regional‑plus‑championship format before the shift to a fully national competition in 2027.

Auckland City FC’s title defence begins in the Northern League

The 2026 Dettol Northern League starts on 21 March, and Auckland City FC headline a strong 12‑team field. The league again serves as the first phase of the National League pathway, with the top sides progressing to the Championship later in the year.

A blockbuster opening weekend

One of the most eye‑catching fixtures across the entire country arrives immediately – Western Springs vs Auckland City FC — the Northern League champions against the National League champions.

It’s a perfect early test for the Navy Blues and a fixture that will draw national attention as both sides look to set the tone for the season.

The National League Championship: the end goal

The Northern League is only the first step. The top performers will qualify for the Dettol National League Championship, where Auckland City FC will aim to return and defend the title they won in dramatic fashion last year: a 7–6 penalty shootout victory over Wellington Olympic after a 2–2 draw at Newtown Park.

The Championship remains the pinnacle of domestic football in Aotearoa, and with the format changing in 2027, this year’s edition carries added significance. It’s the final chance to lift the trophy under the current system before the competition becomes a fully national, double‑round league.

A brief look at the other regional leagues

While Auckland City FC’s focus is on the Northern League, the Central League (from 28 March) and Southern League (from 21 March) will again determine the other qualifiers for the National League Championship. Wellington Olympic, Miramar Rangers, Coastal Spirit, Cashmere Technical, and Christchurch United headline the contenders across the two regions.

Broadcast coverage

More than 250 matches across the regional leagues and the National League Championship will be streamed live and free on FIFA+, giving supporters full access to Auckland City FC’s title defence from opening day to the final whistle.
