LAUTOKA, Fiji - Auckland City FC have booked their place in next week’s OFC Champions League semi‑finals with a game to spare, with captain Mario Ilich’s late header finally broke AS Tiga Sport’s resistance in Lautoka.

The 1–0 victory, coupled with Central Coast’s win over AS Venus, means Sunday’s group finale against Venus will be a dead rubber — though coach Rudy Mozr insists his side will remain focused on finishing with maximum points.
It was a contest that demanded patience. In the first half The Navy Blues dominated possession and territory, but Tiga Sport’s compact defensive block proved stubborn to break down.
After the break, Auckland City’s pressure intensified. Matt Ellis cut in from the left and unleashed a vicious low drive that crashed against the post, agonisingly close to the breakthrough. Substitute Ryan De Vries added further attacking spark, but the decisive moment remained elusive.
The turning point came when Florian Gope was dismissed for a second yellow card, reducing Tiga Sport to ten men. Auckland City pressed relentlessly, and with five minutes remaining, Nathan Lobo’s corner was flicked on by Nathan Rostron.
Ilich arrived at the back post to nod home. “It came late off a set piece, thankfully,” the captain reflected afterwards. “But it doesn’t matter how you get it done on the islands — as long as you get it done. Six points should put us through to the next stage.”
Mozr was equally satisfied with the performance, even if the scoreline suggested a tighter contest than reality. “We were organised, dominant, good performance overall,” he said.
“Not just the attacking plays but even the centre‑backs and the whole defence was good. Matty Foord maybe didn’t make many saves, but he helped us heaps with distribution and communication.
You need everybody 100% and all the boys did their job today.” He added: “It’s extremely difficult in the islands, hot conditions, but we stuck to our plan and got the reward. We want nine points from the group stage — whatever team we put out on Sunday, it will be to win.”
The Navy Blues now stand assured of their semi‑final berth, their late show once again underlining the resilience required in Fiji.
For Ilich, the goal was a captain’s finish; for Mozr, the performance was a statement of control. And for Auckland City, the mission continues — one more group match, then the knockout stage where the real prize awaits.
