This genetic condition has already manifested as a tumour on Walter’s right optic nerve, and he begins a rigorous 12-month chemotherapy regimen this month.

The diagnosis has placed significant emotional, financial and logistical burdens upon Reid’s household.

Coleman said: “This is a diagnosis that has rocked our whole family. The hardest part is trying to explain to Walter’s brother who is only 12 months older than him what is happening and why Walter needs medicine to get better.

“It is going to be a hard 12 months on all of us with regular trips to the hospital at least weekly if not more as he will have to be taken to the hospital any time he gets sick.

“Walter is so small and it is important that we can be with him during this time which will mean time off work for all of us and increased travel costs.”

“Auckland City FC has always stood for community and compassion,” said General Manager Gordon Watson.

“We encourage all supporters to join us in rallying behind Reid and Walter during this challenging time.

“Together, we can ensure Walter receives the care he needs and bring hope to the Walter family.”

Weekly hospital visits, specialised scans, and the prospect of extended medical care until Walter reaches 16 have created an urgent need for financial assistance.

To raise vital funds, the Club has donated exclusive memorabilia, each item autographed by members of our 2025 squad:

  • A signed 2025 Club World Cup jersey
  • Three official Club World Cup pin badges
  • An Auckland City FC pin badge
  • A FIFA Club World Cup Key Ring

These items will be auctioned by the Coleman family and all proceeds will be remitted in full to the Walter family’s GoFundMe campaign.

All funds raised will contribute to:

  • Medical treatment and associated hospital costs
  • Travel expenses for weekly treatments
  • Compensation for loss of income during hospital visits
  • Support and respite for both Walter and his brother
