10-Man City Punished

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC’s National League title defence stumbled out of the blocks on Sunday afternoon, as the Navy Blues suffered a bruising 3-0 defeat to Birkenhead United in a rematch of last season’s grand final at Shepherds Park.

The visitors were dealt a major blow in the 29th minute when debutant Orlando Thorpe was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. The 19-year-old, recently signed from East Coast Bays, endured a nightmare start to life in City colours, leaving his side to battle with ten men for over an hour.

Birkenhead, brimming with Despite the early setback and the sending off, Auckland City showed resilience, carving out several chances and dominating stretches of play, particularly during a spirited 20-minute spell after the break.

Vice-captain Adam Mitchell reflected on the performance with frustration: “Going down to ten men made it extremely difficult, but even at 1-0 we were still in the game and created a few chances. Collectively, though, it wasn’t good enough.”

City’s hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 73rd minute when Christian Gray inadvertently turned the ball into his own net following a swift Birkenhead counterattack. The third goal came deep into injury time, as Paul Hobson’s men exploited the gaps left by City’s desperate push forward.

“We reacted well to the setbacks,” Mitchell added. “We showed we’re a good team, even with ten men. But conceding that second goal was tough, and overall, 3-0 just isn’t good enough. It’s back to the drawing board.”

The result leaves Auckland City without points after two rounds, having sat out the opening weekend with a bye. The Navy Blues will look to regroup quickly ahead of their round three clash at home against Western Suburbs on Saturday, October 11.

“We’ve got to be better across the board,” Mitchell concluded. “It’s still in our hands. We’ve got games to come, and we need to pick up every win from now on if we want to make the final.”

The champions have been warned, there’s no margin for error in this year’s campaign.
