AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC marked Remembrance Day at Sunday’s match against Eastern Suburbs, with a minute’s silence in honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
100 years on since the end of World War I, members of the Navy Blues' playing squad and staff wore poppies, thus continuing the club's long-held tradition of recognising the sacrifice of New Zealand's service men and women in armed conflicts.
Ramon Tribulietx, head coach of Auckland City FC, said: “This is a mark of respect on behalf of our club, players and staff for the sacrifice New Zealanders made. Everyone enjoys life in New Zealand as a result of that and we are very respectful of that as a club and as a group."
The Navy Blues defeated Eastern Suburbs 1-0 courtesy of a second half goal from Dylan Manickum and a crucial penalty save by Enaut Zubikarai.
