All Whites recall for Navy Blues' Howieson

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Navy Blues midfielder Cam Howieson has been rewarded for his outstanding performances in the ISPS Handa Premiership with a recall to the All Whites set-up under new coach Fritz Schmid.

Howieson, who has spent the past two seasons with Auckland City FC, is ecstatic to be re-called into the All Whites camp.

Howieson told www.aucklandcityfc.com it’s an opportunity he couldn’t miss and is looking forward to pulling on the All Whites jersey again.

“It’s been a wee-while now, and it’s always nice to be called up to the national team, so obviously a proud moment for me and my family, so I just got to grasp it and take that opportunity.”

Returning to professional football was always on the back of the nine-time-capped All White’s mind and after stints in Europe with English clubs Burnley and Doncaster Rovers and Scottish club St Mirren, Howieson said he is in the right environment to re-living that dream.

“You want to be playing in a professional environment, I think Auckland City FC is the closest place in New Zealand for it outside of the Hyundai A League, I’ve enjoyed every moment being here and it’s put me in a good step for the All Whites and that’s been at the back of my mind, but I’m just taking it one step at a time.”

After impressing at his former club, Burnley, Howieson was handed his debut on the 4th of April in a 3-1 loss to Birmingham City. He then became youngest ever kiwi to play in the Football League at the young age of 17 years and 103 days.

A month later, Howieson was called up to the senior national team under former All Whites coach, Ricki Herbert. He made his debut in a friendly match against El Salvador in 2012 that finished in a 2-2 draw after coming on for Marco Rojas for the last 20 minutes.

Auckland City FC coach, Ramon Tribulietx is pleased with not only Howieson’s inclusion in the squad, but also the standby inclusion of defender, Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi.

“This is a fantastic reward for Cameron - he’s a very happy man right now. He hasn’t been in there for a few years, and he was delighted with the news and he got a good round of applause from his team-mates and our staff when it was announced.”

“Te Atawhai is also on the reserve list, which is good for Te, he’s been unfortunately out for a year with an ACL injury, so he’s also happy to be in this scenario, not straight in just yet, but he’s being looked at by the new coach which is a big move in the right direction for him. I’m very happy for these two players and they deserve the recognition," Tribulietx said.

Of the other players named in the All Whites squad, no less than seven have some connection to Auckland City FC with Clayton Lewis, Michael Boxall, Adam Mitchell, Tom Doyle, Matt Ridenton, Tim Payne and Myer Bevan all having played for the club at senior or National Youth League level.

That figure rises to eight with Jesse Edge, another former Navy Blues player, listed alongside Hudson-Wihongi in the non-travelling reserves.

The All Whites will play Canada in Murcia, Spain on the 24th of March in a behind closed doors match.
