This week’s Opposition Focus takes a look at Wellington Phoenix Reserves as we preview the visitors for Sunday’s ISPS Handa Premiership encounter.

ABOUT THE VISITORS

While first sighted in 2010 as part of a series of one-off matches against Premiership sides, the Wellington Phoenix Reserves or Wee Nix as they are more affectionately known, were officially admitted into the national league in the 2014/15 season.

Nominally a U-20 squad, the reserves are allowed to field a limited number of over-age players from their A-League squad each week and while this can alter the look of their team from week to week, their core squad already boasts a number of younger talents who have tasted action in Australia’s’ national league.

This season, Chris Greenacre has taken the coaching reins after spending five years involved in the coaching team of the senior side, including most of last season as co-coach.

NAVY BLUES TEAM NEWS
Ryan De Vries returned to the starting line-up against Hamilton Wanderers after missing the previous game against Canterbury with a knock to his ankle. Kris Bright is back in training and getting closer to full fitness while Mario Bilen has made remarkable progress and while not yet fit to play, may be an outside chance to make the Club World Cup squad.

Owen Parker-Price is a long-term absentee due to injury.

FAST FACTS
Wellington Phoenix reserves have often risen to the occasion when playing the Navy Blues. In fact, Auckland City are one of the few teams the Wee Nix have beaten twice since joining the league in 2014.

In the first ever competitive match between the sides, three goals in the first half hour fired the Wee Nix to a 3-1 win at Kiwitea Street, but Navy Blues responded later in the season with a 7-0 hammering in Wellington.

Last season, the Wee Nix defeated the Navy Blues 1-0 in the capital with the only goal of the game scored by former City player Logan Rogerson.

Those Wee Nix victories have yet to be matched by their senior side with Auckland City unbeaten in three matches against the clubs’ first team.
