AUCKLAND, New Zealand - The Junior Navy Blues are gearing up for their biggest away trip of the season as they take on Southern United in the National Youth League on Sunday.

Coach Hiroshia Miyazawa and head coach Aaron McFarland have had a short turnaround after the end of a busy winter campaign with Onehunga Sports and Central United but Miyazawa says the pair are satisfied.

"We have been having a good pre-season and everyone has been working hard to adapt to our style of football.

"We don’t expect the team to perform exactly the way the first team play but we understand that it will take sometime and we will try to be better each week," he said.

Pre-season results have been good with a solid performance in a 1-0 defeat to Lotto NRFL Second Division outfit Waiheke Island, a 2-0 win over Manurewa AFC's academy side and a 2-0 win over Hibiscus Coast courtesy of goals from Jack Anderson and Josh Oliver.

While the friendly matches have seen the Junior Navy Blues stick close to Auckland, Sunday's jaunt 1,573km away, Miyazawa acknowledges the travel will be a factor for the team to overcome.

"Yes, this is a long trip and our squad is very young and for most of them it is their first season to play in the National Youth League.

"It will be a difficult experience but at the end of the day travelling is big part of footballer's life and it will be a great experience for the young players," he said.

The Junior Navy Blues will miss Leon Van den Hoven who is on international duty at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India with New Zealand while Robert Tipelu is unavailable.

The league gets underway on Saturday when Wellington Phoenix Youth visit Hawke's Bay United and Team Wellington host Eastern Suburbs AFC.

On Sunday defending champions Hamilton Wanderers host Tasman United, Canterbury United entertain Waitakere United.
