Junior Navy Blues start with win

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - The Junior Navy Blues left it late but begin the National Youth League season with a valuable 2-1 win over Team Wellington.

Auckland City FC dominated the match in terms of chance creation but showed a profligacy in front of goal that let the home side off the hook.

That wastefulness in front of goal changed dramatically in the second half when Jack Anderson curled home a beautiful shot on 73 minutes.

Team Wellington chased the game and drew level in exciting circumstances when substitute Mohammadi equalised within seconds of coming on.

But it was another substitute who would have the final say in the shape of 16-year-old Antonio Bonkovich who scored a last gasp winner only moments after he also came on.

Auckland City FC held on for three precious points and coach Andy Peat expressed his satisfaction with the performance and result.

However, Peat said there were one or two items for the Junior Navy Blues to work on before their next match.

"I'm pleased with today's performance and a sign that all the work the players did pre-season.

"It also shows you the calibre of the competition. Team Wellington are a strong opponent with a very good style of play.

"I was happy with performance. The last 15 minutes was a bit scrappy and showed the youthfulness of the team but we held on to our lead.

"Created a number of opportuntiies and the style of play. We just need to capitalise on our chances in front of goal. We need to sharpen up over the next few weeks.

"Good finishing from Jack Anderson in pre-season and continuing now. Antonio Bonkovich did great to come on and score a goal on his debut.

"We'll look to keep growing as a team and as a unit as the season progresses," said Peat.
