HONIARA, Solomon Islands - Auckland City FC, 12-time Oceania champions and proud representatives of the Pacific region at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this June, reinforced their deep connection to Oceania with a memorable visit to King George VI National High School.
Taking a break from their preparations for Saturday’s OFC Champions League final against Hekari United, the team spent the day connecting with students in a festive and joy-filled atmosphere. The school rolled out a warm welcome as players shared personal stories and inspired students to pursue their dreams, whether in education, football, futsal, or other passions. The visit was a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and camaraderie.
Auckland City FC board member Colin Cook reflected on the club’s enduring ties with the Solomon Islands, emphasising the legacy of exceptional players who have graced Kiwitea Street over the years. Icons such as Micah Lea’alafa, Henry Fa’arodo, David Firisua, Vivian Wickham, George Suri, and Paulo Mwaritara hold a cherished place in the club’s history. “Their contributions continue to resonate, and visits like this strengthen the bonds that unite our club with the Pacific,” Cook remarked.
Dylan Manickum, Auckland City FC’s dynamic midfielder and captain of the New Zealand Futsal Whites, paid a tribute to the legendary Solomon Islands futsal team, the Kurukuru, whose dominance and inspiration have left an indelible mark on the region. He extended special thanks to Elliot Ragamo, the iconic captain of the Kurukuru’s golden era, who is now lending his expertise to Auckland City FC as Team Liaison Officer during their Champions League campaign.
The visit culminated in a football session on the school grounds, where players and students shared smiles, skills, and laughter. It was a fitting conclusion to a day that showcased Auckland City FC’s commitment to fostering community relationships across Oceania.
This unforgettable experience not only demonstrated the club’s pride in its Pacific heritage but also underscored the powerful role football plays in uniting people and inspiring future generations. As Auckland City FC prepares to represent the region on the world stage, moments like these serve as a reminder of the profound connections that form the foundation of their success.
