AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - Auckland City came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over West Coast Rangers on Tuesday night at the Croatian Club.
The early stages of the match, however, lacked cutting-edge opportunities, with David Yoo’s ninth-minute free kick sailing over the crossbar.
City applied sustained pressure midway through the half, earning a flurry of corners, only for the West Coast Rangers defence to stand resolute.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute in fortuitous fashion, a corner deflecting off a defender into the Auckland City net. But the Navy Blues hit back almost instantly. On his debut, the young Jeremy Foo smashing home a cross to level the scores just before the interval.
After the break, both teams showed plenty of attacking intent. End-to-end action in the 68th minute brought a rare chance for Auckland City, but Damian Hirst’s intervention kept the scores level.
Just as it seemed the match might drift toward a stalemate, Dylan Manickum emerged as the hero in the 80th minute by coolly slotting home to secure the three points for the Navy Blues.
While the performance was far from vintage Auckland City, the team’s ability to deliver in key moments underscored the Navy Blues’ perfect start to the season remained intact.
