AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Following their opening round victory against Melville United in the Boy’s Youth National League Auckland City FC U-17 have suffered a 3-0 defeat to their Auckland United counterparts at Keith Hay Park on  Sunday afternoon.

Following an evenly contested scoreless first half the homes side netted three times after the break to claim all three point sin their junior Dominion Road Derby.

James Ray opened the scoring just minutes after City’s Luka Vicelich’s free kick narrowly missed the target at the other end of the field.

Dejaun Naidoo doubled his side’s advantage in the 76th minute before Conor Skyes added a third in the final minutes.

Head coach Archie Dias couldn’t hide his disappointment with the City youngsters’ second half performance.

“Yes we are disappointed, I think we did okay in the first half but we should have taken our chances and it’s something we definitely have to work on.

“It was another good learning experience for the boys but we have to do better, we need to learn from it and come back stronger in the next game,” he explained after the game.

“We just made some small mistakes in the second half and we need to learn from those, we need to have better communication,”

“United were more clinical, taking there chances and we didn’t take ours,” Dias added.

Auckland City FC U-17's next match is at home against their Eastern Suburbs rivals at Kiwitea Street on Sunday 24 September with a 12.30pm kick-off.

Dias is expecting another tough contest.

“They are a good team, we’ve had a couple high scoring encounters with them but the boys will learn from this experience and we will give them a good challenge,’ said the junior Navy Blues coach

In other results, FC Tauranga Moana defeated Melville United 3-1 while Eastern Suburbs edged past East Coast Bays 1-0.
