AUCKLAND, New Zealand  - Auckland City FC defender Alfie Rogers is excited about the prospect of passing on some of his knowledge and experience to the young Navy Blues after he was appointed U23’s assistant coach while continuing his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The 28-year-old, who played 107 games for the club, has been out of action since helping City to a  2-0 victory against Melville United in the National League Championship in November last year.

Hoping to return to the Navy Blues playing squad by the start of the 2023 National League Championship phase in September, Rogers is delighted to join the U-23s coaching staff as Valerio Raccuglia's assistant in the meantime.

“I’ve played with a few of these boys here and  If I can help  them out in any way, passing on any knowledge I have and if that can make them a better player, that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Rogers believes there is plenty of  talent in the club’s U23 ranks and under the right guidance the future can be bright for a number of young City players.

"They are really great kids to be honest and really good footballers and I know if they work hard and  listen what Valerio is trying to get them to do, they could get a really good career in football in New Zealand and maybe overseas as well.”

Meanwhile Raccuglia is also confident Rogers’ involvement will have a positive impact on the development of the City youngsters.

“It’s good to have somebody with his experience beside me, so it will be a good addition to the team, I’m happy, very happy,” said the Auckland City FC head coach.

The U23s  next face Auckland United on Saturday, 15 April at Keith Hay Park.
