AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC has thrown support behind a fundraising initiative inspired by Wellington Olympic to help Napier City Rovers FC after the devastation left behind by Cyclone Gabrielle.
James Mac Aodhagain from Wellington Olympic AFC launched the initiative to help raise money to support Napier City Rovers FC with a gold coin collection proposed for the upcoming OFC Champions League playoff matches with the Navy Blues.
A spokesperson for Auckland City FC said: "If you are able to make a donation, no matter what size, rest assured it will be well received and greatly appreciated by Napier’s young footballers.
We may be rivals on the playing field but at times like this it is important that our football community stands together as one and shows solidarity and demonstrates our club's collective catchcry of ”Strength in Unity."
A truly breathtaking response from people all over NZ today. I want to give special thanks to @CentralUtd_FC, @AucklandCity_FC and Electric Kiwi for their generous donations. Thank you for your #StrengthInUnity. Puno ti hvala pic.twitter.com/MdJ1iGhck0— Séamas Uinseann Mac Aoḋagáin (@MacAodhagainJ) February 22, 2023
Also proposed is the delivery of football boots and playing kit to the Hawke's Bay in general with both Wellington Olympic and Auckland City FC and Central United FC examining their overflow of equipment to see what can be gifted.
The campaign has picked up pace and was covered by the New Zealand Herald this week.
A Give-a-little Page has been set up and Central United FC and Auckland City FC have already made significant donations to this very worthy cause.
