AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC's pursuit of a finals berth in the National League Championship is back on track after a world class strike by Cam Howieson lit up Kiwitea Street on Saturday.

The All Whites midfielder scored two goals, one just before half time, but its the second that will linger longest in the memory after Howieson smashed home a 70 metre shot that left Phoenix goalkeeper Callum Kennett hapless.

The two goal salvo by Howieson handed City a valuable 2-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix, a result that lifts City back into second place behind in-form Wellington Olympic.

Howieson has enjoyed an outstanding season for City as skipper helping guide the Navy Blues to a Northern League, Chatham Cup and OFC Champions League treble as well as contributing to the All Whites OFC Nations Cup win in March.

Coach Albert Riera was delighted with the result and performance after last week's disappointing 3-2 defeat to Auckland United FC.

"I'm extremely happy not just with the three points but also the performance.

"Sometimes its not easy knowing in the back of your mind that you have to win the game to stay in the National League Championship hunt and in the top two.

"It can be hard because you have to be very composed and I thought we were very efficient today.

"Chris Greenacre has done a very good job with his team and we knew they would be very well disciplined and would work very hard.

"When you get chances but don't put them away the other team retains belief but we've scored a great goal - the hardest chance to convert - by Cam Howieson.

"When you have someone of his quality of Cam Howieson who has the quality, ability and vision, and the right time and the right moment of the game and he did it.

"It was that goal that made the game safe for us.

"I could see Enaut Zubikarai was very happy because he was telling me throughout that the Phoenix keeper was very far off his line.

"But it was an unbelievable goal by Cam Howieson and we're very happy with the three points," he said.

In other results, Auckland United FC lost 3-1 at Wellington Olympic, Melville United toppled Birkenhead United 2-0, Christchurch United thumped Miramar Rangers 3-0 and Cashmere Technical picked up a 4-2 win over Napier City Rovers.
