AUCKLAND, New Zealand - A late Emiliano Tade goal secures a 2-2 draw as ten man Auckland City FC snatched a valuable point at Birkenhead United in the National League Championship today.

Birkenhead United opened the scoring through skipper Sam Burfoot after just four minutes in a whirlwind start backed by a vocal Shepherd's Park support that never let up throughout the day.

United doubled the lead in the second half when Nick Forrester slammed home just four minutes into the next stanza and the writing was on the wall for City when skipper Cam Howieson was harshly sent off with just 13 minutes left.

The match turned on its head when Sam Brotherton lashed home a beautiful right foot volley on 82 minutes while United goalkeeper Silvio Rodic made a fantastic save when he blocked a Ryan De Vries thunderbolt.

Rodic was in the act again when he made a world class save off a Tade free-kick then prevented substitute Angus Kilkolly from equalising from a cutely taken header.

Rodic looked to be unbeatable until Tade skipped by two challenges then let rip with a sensational long range shot that rippled the back of the net to make it 2-2 four minutes into additional time.

With Auckland United and Napier City Rovers drawing with Christchurch United and Miramar Rangers, Tade's equaliser was critical to ensuring City stayed in the hunt for a finals berth.

Coach Albert Riera was disappointed with the way his team played in the first 30 minutes of the game but was proud of the way his team fought back with diminished numbers.

"From a football perspective that was one of the worst performances we've given this year.

"Unfortunately, when you play that way against a very good team this is the situation that happens.

"I thought we gave away the first 30 minutes of the game to Birkenhead and I said so at half time.

"I told the players we can't have a repeat of that in the second half and within four minutes we were 2-0 down.

"But we showed a lot of personality and character. I felt we shouldn't have let the situation get to that point but at the end of the day we're leaving here with a smile on our face.

"The players gave a massive shift but its bitter sweet for us.

"When you play against Birkenhead you always know its going to be tense and physical and tough football.

"Both team try to give everything which you can understand but my gut reaction was that Cam Howieson's challenge was not a red card.

"I would have to see it again to be sure but I'll ask the referee, he's a very honest guy, so we'll see what happens.

"It was daunting to see how well Silvio Rodic played, he had an outstanding game for Birkenhead.

"Conor was our hero last week and that's what a good goalkeeper can inspire in a team.

"I wasn't happy with our corner kicks. We kept giving the ball to Rodic from our deliveries and we have to be much better than that.

"When Emiliano finally beat Rodic the emotion for me was much the same as if we had got three points," Riera said.

Auckland City FC's next match is at home to Napier City Rovers on Sunday 23 October 2022 at 2.30pm at Kiwitea Street.
