AUCKLAND, New Zealand - It is with deep sadness that the members of Auckland City FC and Central United FC heard of the passing of Audrey Earl earlier this week.

Audrey was a Life Member of our near neighbours Mt Albert-Ponsonby AFC and was a highly respected and loved member of their club.

Audrey had fought a long, brave and courageous battle with cancer dating back to December 2016. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones.

A person with a kind heart, positive outlook on life, and an engaging and outgoing personality, she made you feel welcome when you visited Mt Albert-Ponsonby’s clubrooms.

Audrey will certainly be missed by many people across our football community.

The ties between our local clubs were further strengthened in 2016 when Auckland City donated a trophy to honour the passing of another Mt Albert-Ponsonby stalwart, the late Brian Stanyer.

Central United and Mt Albert-Ponsonby now play for this trophy on an annual basis.

Audrey’s husband Keith was one of the initiators and driving forces behind the establishment of this trophy.

At the time Keith noted “Ivan Vuksich (Auckland City’s chairperson) said to me ‘we might be rivals on the field, but off the field we are all brothers in football’”

At times like this that sentiment resonates stronger than ever.

Vuksich said:

“Our football community has lost a special person who made a significant and valuable contribution to our game. Audrey’s legacy at Mt Albert-Ponsonby is unquestioned and she will always be remembered with fondness and love.”

“On behalf of everyone at Kiwitea Street our deepest condolences are extended to Keith, Jordan, Caitlin and all of Audrey’s friends and family.”

Central United’s president Mate Tolj said:

“I have a great affinity and deep respect for people who put all their hard work and effort into clubs and I know Audrey was one of those people.”

“I’ve known Keith personally for many years not just through football but also through the bowling fraternity and our deepest sympathies are with him and his family at this time.”

As a sign of respect Auckland City’s players will wear black armbands during this Saturday’s National League Championship match at Kiwitea Street against Cashmere Technical. The players of both tams will also observe a minutes silence prior to kick-off to honour Audrey’s life.
