WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Ryan De Vries and Emiliano Tade handed Auckland City FC a valuable 2-1 win over Wellington Olympic at Endeavour Park this afternoon.

The victory means Auckland City FC successfully defend the Mediterranean Cup and join Cashmere Technical and Napier City Rovers at the top of the league.

Wellington Olympic dominated the first half and created half a dozen chances to take the lead but were denied by outstanding goalkeeping by Conor Tracey.

The one occasion Tracey was beaten the goal was disallowed after Gianni Bouzoukis was ajudged to have strayed into an offside position.

The half time break gave coach Albert Riera a chance to give his players a rev up and that seemed to be exactly what City needed after Liam Gillion set up Ryan De Vries who beat Scott Basalaj at close range.

Olympic persevered and went level when Jack-Henry Sinclair cut in on his right then forced a save out of Tracey who could only palm the ball into the path of Bouzoukis who swept home unmarked at the far post.

Riera threw Angus Kilkolly and Emiliano Tade into the mix and his faith in the pair was rewarded when Tade swerved home a superb right foot corner that may have taken a nick off defender Tor Petersen-Davenport with five minutes left to play.

In other matches, Cashmere Technical thrashed Miramar Rangers 4-0 in Christchurch while Napier City Rovers turned over Wellington Phoenix 1-0 at Park Island.

On Sunday Birkenhead United take on Christchurch United at Shepherds Park in Beach Haven while Auckland United host Melville United at Keith Hay Park.

Auckland City FC's next match is at home to Cashmere Technical on Saturday 8 October 2022 at 3.30pm NZDT.
