De Vries treble sends City to semi-finals
DUNEDIN, New Zealand - Auckland City FC is through to the semi-finals of the Chatham Cup after a 6-0 win over Dunedin City Royals at Logan Park.
A hat-trick by Ryan De Vries and a goal each for Cam Howieson, Emiliano Tade and Joe Lee made the long journey south for the Navy Blues a comfortable one.
Last season City were eliminated at the quarter final stage by Miramar Rangers but there was never any danger of that in a game Albert Riera's team dominated.
Riera was delighted with the result and performance achieved after a long day and temperatures between two and seven degrees celsius.
"I thought it was a fantastic result. We always talk about not making excuses and we could have made some today after a long trip to Dunedin.
"I thought the players were exceptional today - the ones who played 90 or 60 minutes, players who came off the bench, we needed everyone.
"The players were excellent and I thought the performance today was one of the best so far.
"They did what we asked them to do and I couldn't have asked for anything more from them," he said.
Auckland City FC's next challenge is the OFC Champions League opener with former champions Hienghene Sport at Ngahue on Friday 5 August.
Riera says adaptability is key for the tournament.
"We have to be flexible and we've been doing that throughout the season.
"We've had kick off times at all times of the day and on a variety of surfaces and we'll have to adopt this next week," he said.
Elsewhere, Miramar Rangers were beaten 4-3 by Hamilton Wanderers in a thriller in the capital, while Waiheke United were edged out by ten man Eastern Suburbs 1-0.
Cashmere Technical, the last south island side left, were beaten 3-2 by Wellington Olympic.
The match between Auckland City FC and Hienghene Sport kicks off at 12.00pm NZDT.
