Navy Blues learn OFC Champions League fate
AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC have drawn Hienghene Sport, Rewa and Nikao Sokattak in the group stages of the OFC Champions League 2022 following the draw today.
OFC Competitions Manager Chris Kemp and former Auckland City FC and Solomon Islands international Henry Fa'arodo were on hand at OFC headquarters to oversee the draw, the first in over two years due to the global pandemic.
Group A features the four winners of the the national playoffs from Tahiti (AS Venus), Vanuatu (Galaxy), Papua New Guinea (Lae City) and Solomon Islands (Central Coast FC).
AS Venus are the most storied of the clubs in the section with the Tahitians veterans of the first OFC Club Championship in 1999 and 2000.
Galaxy are likely to be one of the heavyweights in the competition with a raft of experienced players while Lae City have gone as far as the quarter finals in the past.
Central Coast FC edged Solomon Warriors to qualify and make their first appearance at the finals ever.
On paper, Auckland City FC are favourites in Group B, but Hienghene Sport pose a serious threat with the New Caledonians winning the last OFC Champions League back in 2019 when they defeated fellow New Caledonians AS Magenta.
Rewa also appear at the OFC Champions League for the first time after they upset Lautoka in the playoffs and could be the suprise packet in the section.
Nikao Sokattak, like AS Venus, have competed at the top level in the early days of the OFC Club Championship but face a tough challenge given Auckland City FC took apart Tupapa Maraerenga 15-0 in the group stages in 2018.
While historical comparisons can be made they aren't necessarily a reliable way to measure how competitive or strong any of the other seven teams could be.
