WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Auckland City FC slip to second place after a late Logan Rogerson goal hands Wellington Phoenix a 1-0 win at David Farrington Park.

Auckland City FC came into the match top of the Stirling Sports Premiership but now sit in second place, just one point ahead of defending champions Team Wellington and the undefeated Canterbury United, both with a game in hand.

The Navy Blues, who had lost once previously to the Wellington Phoenix back in January 2015, dominated this latest encounter but wasted a raft of good scoring chances against a strong Wee Nix outfit.

All Whites Michael Ridenton, Logan Rogerson and Louis Fenton were joined by Lewis Italiano, fresh from a Hyundai A-League outing against the Central Coast Mariners, and age group international Alex Rufer in what looked a tougher than usual line-up.

Despite that Ramon Tribulietx offered no excuses and was not happy to watch his side lose their second game of the season, after they lost their opening game at home to Waitakere United.

“Our last couple of matches have been very similar. A game we completely dominate and where we created chances but unfortunately we don’t capitalise on them.

"Possession doesn’t win games but we created so many shots inside the box. Maybe we have been training a lot and we are not as sharp as we should be," he said.

Wellington Phoenix U-20 coach Andy Hedge saw the game similarly though was understandably delighted with the three points that lifted his team into sixth place.

“We knew we were going to have a battle in terms of regaining the ball and not succumbing to the pressure they put on you,” said Hedge.

“So over the course of 90 minutes we have probably not deserved to win the game. We have got out of jail, but we have taken our chance and they have had a couple of chances they did not take so we’re happy with the three points but not the performance.”

The Navy Blues now turn their attention to next week's match with Hawke's Bay United at Kiwitea Street, their final hit out before the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2016.

That game is live on Sky Sport and kicks off at 4.35pm on Saturday 26 November.
