AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC assistant coach Ivan Vicelich says the Navy Blues must show improvement from their last outing against Bay Olympic when the two teams meet again in the Northern League tomorrow.

Auckland City FC ground out a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Bay Olympic on a day where the home side missed a raft of glorious chances to beat the Navy Blues.

Honggyu Han's sensational opener after just 40 seconds set the mood music for a difficult afternoon but a spate of wastefulness in front of goal eventually led to their downfall with Aidan Carey and Angus Kilkolly netting the goals that saw City home.

vicelich told www.aucklandcityfc.com that there needed to be improvement from Monday's successful but shaky showing at Olympic Park.

"Hopefully the way we play tomorrow will be different to how we played on Monday.

"We've had a good week to reflect on the last game. We were grateful for the three points and the players gave their all so to come back from 1-0 down to win is always good.

"But we have to look to improve the performance and we've done that on the training pitch and now we need to transfer that to Kiwitea Street," he said.

One talking point is how close Angus Kilkolly is to breaking a scoring record held by Keryn Jordan for the best part of 15 years.

The Hastings-born front man has scored in eight consecutive games for the club and is just two games short of Jordan's record of ten.

Vicelich praised Kilkolly's efforts but provided important context around the Jordan record and his striker's contemporary form.

"Angus deserves a lot of credit for the way he's played. He came into the squad quite late but he's impressed everyone with how hard he's worked and the form he's in.

"His attitude and character has also been very good and, of course, the icing on the cake is he's scoring a lot of goals.

"By scoring goals regularly he's inched up on Keryn's record. Angus is a very level headed guy and he's focused on doing well every week," he said.

While records are nice to set or break, Vicelich says if Kilkolly comes up short that doesn't mean he's failed.

"It's difficult when it comes to records. As Angus says, you don't actively go out to try and break records, its more a case of if they come along and it becomes a possibility to equal or break a record, then it may happen.

"We have to be honest as well and say that if Angus doesn't score on Saturday that that doesn't mean he's playing badly or somehow not good enough to equal or beat Keryn's record.

"He's scored 11 goals in 11 games and that is the type of form that any striker would love to be in.

"We want him to keep scoring and doing well for the team and we want to keep winning games," Vicelich said.

Kilkolly himself downplayed his scoring form and preferred to focus on making sure he contributes to helping Auckland City FC win games.

"The record is interesting but it's not my focus and respectfully, I'm not fussed too much by it.

"I'm just happy to be scoring goals and helping the team win and whether Keryn's record is there or not, I'm trying to score goals in every game I play," Kilkolly told www.aucklandcityfc.com.

The game kicks off at Kiwitea Street on Saturday 12 June 2021 at 3.00pm NZDT.

In Lotto NRFL U-23 Premier Division action, Auckland City FC U-23s are at home to Bay Olympic with the match scheduled for a 12.00pm kick-off at the Croatian Cultural Society.

EXTRA INFORMATION

ANGUS KILKOLLY SCORING SEQUENCE

Kilkolly's first goal of the season came in a 4-1 away win at Northern Rovers on 5 April 2021 and since then he's been unable to stop scoring goals.

While it is difficult to compare between eras, there are elements to Kilkolly's run that differ from Jordan's.

Jordan's run of scoring form came at a time where the former South African international's major health issues were just coming to light. That fact in and of itself boggles the mind but is true testimony to the skill, ability and personal character of Jordan himself.

The South African was also scoring his goals in the New Zealand Football Championship, a competition regarded as the highest level of the game outside of the OFC Champions League or A League at that particular time in New Zealand.

Kilkolly's run is taking place in a somewhat lesser regional competition but the feat remains impressive nonetheless. A cursory glance of previous sequences by two All Whites and club-record goal scorer Emiliano Tade of six consecutive games demonstrate how difficult it is to maintain any type of scoring streak.

The Kilkolly Sequence
17.04.21 v West Coast Rangers (A) won 4-1 - Kilkolly
24.04.21 v Western Springs (H) won 4-3 - Kilkolly

08.05.21 v Birkenhead United (H) won 4-0 - Kilkolly 2
15.05.21 v Melville United (A) won 3-0 - Kilkolly
22.05.21 v Eastern Suburbs (A) won 5-0 - Kilkolly 2
29.05.21 v Auckland United FC (H) won 3-1 - Kilkolly
07.06.21 v Bay Olympic (A) won 2-1 - Kilkolly

The Jordan Sequence
12.11.05 v Otago United (A) won 3-2 - Jordan
19.11.05 v Hawke's Bay United (H) won 3-0 - Jordan
