AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC will face Tauranga City FC in the Chatham Cup third round on Saturday 19 June 2021 at Kiwitea Street.
Navy Blues coach José Figueira was pleased with the home tie but warned Tauranga City would provide a stern test of City's Cup ambitions.
Tauranga City have emerged as a force in the youth space in recent times with victories and top performances at U-17 National Tournaments.
With that success, the club is now seeing some of those young players now stepping up to the first team that gives a good blend of local and experienced players that could make them a tough opponent when the teams come together on June 19.
Tauranga City sit sixth in the Lotto NRFL First Division and are only three points off a tightly packed league behind Albany United, Waiheke United, Manurewa AFC, Takapuna and Mount Albert Ponsonby.
"We're delighted to be drawn at home again. Having played and coached against Tauranga City away it is always a tough challenge to manage, so we look forward to hosting them at Kiwitea Street. Tauranga City are a club with rich history and whilst today they find themselves mid table in Division 1 we will not be taking them lightly.
"As we saw from our last round match against Ellerslie who came out of the blocks quickly and caused us some some problems, we will need to show the same patience, poise and purpose against Tauranga City if we want to get through.
"At the start of the season we earmarked the Chatham Cup as a competition we wanted to do well in, but to do that you must take things a game at a time, and not only pay respect to every opponent along the way, but also play and approach these games with the very highest standards," he said.
The draw set up some mouthwatering fixtures with Auckland United FC drawn away to Birkenhead United while in the capital Lower Hutt City drew Wellington Olympic while there will be at least one non-league team in the last 16 with West Hamilton United at home to Ngaruawahia United.
